To recover threatened species and slow the pace of extinction, Species360 and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) have announced a new partnership to create the world’s first shared global system that links biobanking data with animal health and care records.
A new study published in Scientific Reports draws on more than six decades of data from the Species360 Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) to show that elephants living in modern zoos are surviving significantly longer than they did in the 1960s. The research, led by ZSL (the Zoological Society of London) with Species360, the University of Southern Denmark, and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, finds that in the most recent decades, zoo elephant survival now matches or exceeds that of the wild and semi-wild populations included in the study.
Despite their charismatic nature, little is know about the demographics of sharks and rays. Species360 is leading two research projects exploring how sharks and rays grow across different ages and between the sexes, and how their reproductive success changes as they age.
