Species360 had a delegation attending CoP19 to represent Species360 members and to highlight research from the Species360 Conservation Science Alliance (CSA).
Species360 team members participate in a wide array of conferences in 2022, taking the opportunity to meet and talk with members and partners around the world.
In all, ZooParc de Beauval maintains as many as 15,000 historical biological samples. Storing those samples is one challenge. Another is tracking each sample, its origin, and any test results, says Beauval Head Veterinarian Dr. Baptiste Mulot.
To learn more about managing such a diverse collection across multiple sites, we spoke with RZSS Curator Jo Elliott and Senior Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Adam Naylor. They discussed the role of information shared using non-profit Species360’s Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) and recent changes to expand staff access to husbandry, medical, and studbooks data.
As a member of the Species360 community for over 35 years, Bristol Zoological Society is already using ZIMS – the Zoological Information Management System used by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA), the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), and other zoo and aquarium associations worldwide – to streamline the way that information is recorded and applied throughout the organisation.
In April, EAZA Academy will offer ZIMS for Medical Training, a course introducing concepts and best practices for using ZIMS for Medical. The course will cover both data entry and data retrieval. Attendees will learn how to navigate in the Medical module, input data into the eight modules such as Pharmacy, Sample Storage, and Global Medical Resources, and extract and analyze data using ZIMS reports and tools.
We welcome our newest Species360 institutional member, Harteman Wildfowl, a Dutch conservation breeding facility that is instrumental in saving one of the world's most endangered birds, the White-winged duck, and is a leader in education and conservation of bird species.
New research, shared late last month in the Future of Aquariums/Europe webinar presented by Impacts Experience and Species360, shows that visitors increasingly expect aquariums to be conservation institutions. What does this mean for post-pandemic recovery? And how have closures helped aquariums to increase their presence "outside the walls" of their facilities?
We are fortunate to share that Hannah Jenkins has joined Species360 as a Member Training Specialist, expanding our staff based in Europe. Hannah comes to Species360 from the Zoological Society of London where she was Zoological Registrar for ZSL London and ZSL Whipsnade Zoos.
Kudos and thanks to member Diergaarde Blijdorp / Rotterdam Zoo (Netherlands) as we celebrate your work and contributions over 45 years as a member of the Species360 and EAZA - the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria communities. Rotterdam Zoo experts record data on 28,950 animals of 1,897 species, including violet turacos hatched this fall.
