New in ZIMS: Announcing the brand-new Taxon Profiles

New Taxon Profiles

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the all-new Taxon Profiles in the Species360 Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS)! This innovative tool offers a comprehensive, streamlined overview of species-related data, designed to make it easier than ever to manage and understand critical species information. Taxon Profiles brings together essential data into one intuitive and accessible platform, empowering users with insights to support species management and conservation efforts.

The first release of Taxon Profiles, part of a multi-phase rollout, features the display of mean weight for animals by age, with a shaded area representing 1 standard deviation above and below the mean for each taxonomy. This data is broken down by month and includes an option to filter by sex type, and to zoom in for a more granular view, providing valuable insights into species’ growth patterns.

The new interactive tool features two components:

  • Left-hand panel: access global species holdings, CITES listings, IUCN Red List of Threatened Species status, studbooks and current ZIMS population size.
  • Right-hand panel: currently displays a global-level summary of body weight patterns across ages, at the species level.

Taxon Profiles replaces the previous Survival, Reproduction and Growth (SRG) reports in ZIMS and boasts a modern, intuitive design. Thanks to our Senior Product Designer’s extensive experience in user experience (UX), Taxon Profiles is visually appealing and easy to navigate.

Dr. Rachel Thompson, Species360 Senior Product Owner, said: “We are thrilled to release the first phase of Taxon Profiles. The team has worked hard behind the scenes to ensure the analytics are accurate and the user experience is seamless. We hope this tool becomes an invaluable resource for our members, helping them make evidence-based decisions to enhance species care.”

Stay tuned for upcoming phases of Taxon Profiles, which will include additional features like survival and reproduction reports. The second release will add the ability to see your institution animal weights as a scatterplot overlying the global summary graph, as well as habitat information from the IUCN Red List.
