Species360 is pleased to welcome new member BIOPARC Aquarium of Gijón (Spain). As part of the global Species360 community, which includes more than 350 aquatic institutions worldwide, the Aquarium will record and share information on aquatic species and habitats using the Species360 Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS).

A vast reservoir of knowledge

In all, the Bioparc maintains 60 saltwater and freshwater aquariums, 12 ecosystems and more than 2 million liters of water. These habitats replicate rivers, oceans, and tropical rainforest environments for more than 460 different species.

The Bioparc’s aquarists, veterinary, and other teams will use the information recorded in ZIMS to monitor and manage quality of these enclosures and the care of individuals and groups. In addition, the data recorded in ZIMS is aggregated across like-minded institutions to advance the care and conservation of species — enabling Bioparc scientists to impact conservation worldwide.

BIOPARC Aquarium of Gijón is a member of the Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AIZA) and and receives 185,000 visitors annually. The institution also plans to join the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).

Nonprofit Species360 and its members facilitate international collaboration in recording and sharing information to improve the care and conservation of species. BIOPARC Aquarium of Gijón parent organization Rain Forest S.L. is also a Species360 member.
