We’re pleased to share the latest milestone in the ongoing modernization of ZIMS. The Rescue accession type is now available exclusively in the new ZIMS platform, and the legacy rescue accession in original ZIMS has been sunset. Collected from Wild accessions have also moved to the new interface, with the legacy From Wild accession sunset as well.
This is part of our continued work to rebuild ZIMS functionality in a modernized and mobile-optimized environment, and we’re excited to bring these improvements to members who work with rescue and rehabilitation records.
Nannette Driver-Ruiz, Species360, Senior Product Owner ZIMS for Husbandry and Aquatics, said: “Rescue centers have limited time and resources. We designed an intuitive accession workflow to cut down on data entry, giving caretakers more time to focus on what matters most – the animals.”
The new rescue accessioning workflow has been designed from the ground up with rescue and rehabilitation work in mind. It’s mobile-friendly, so staff can log records in the field without needing to be at a desktop, and it removes data fields that were rarely used in favour of ones that reflect how rescue work actually happens.
For rescue facilities, the Event type defaults to “Rescued”, while the Rescue location defaults to the country of the logged in institution, further saving time when adding data to ZIMS. Additionally, several data entry fields have been tailor made to support wildlife rescue work, such as:
After completing a rescue accession, you can now choose “Save and add data” to jump directly to data entry with your newly accessioned animal in focus. This saves time when adding clinical notes, weights and identifiers. And there is a “Back to accessions” navigation option that appears when entering data after creating an accession, making it easier to return to your workflow. Additionally, a new screen displays all accessions.
Collected from Wild accessions have also moved to the new ZIMS platform, and the legacy From Wild accession in original ZIMS has been sunset. Like the rescue accession workflow, the new Collected from Wild accession workflow benefits from the improved mobile layout, updated accession form, and usability enhancements included in the most recent ZIMS release.
New accession templates can now be created for rescue and from wild accessions. A dedicated management screen makes it straightforward to find, edit, and delete them, and templates are available to everyone at your institution who has rights to add accessions. Please note that templates from the legacy ZIMS workflow are not accessible in the new platform, so you will need to create new ones going forward.
This release also brings a number of broader usability improvements across accession workflows. The accessions list now includes new filters for staff, enclosure, and record type, with improved mobile layout behaviour. Animal identifiers in supported list views now link directly to the beta animal profile. The accession form includes hover definitions for life stages and rearing types, which provides helpful context directly in the form.
The new workflow is live now. If you have any questions or need help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Member Support team at support@species360.org.
The new rescue accession feature has been built in conjunction with Mandai Nature in Singapore to support the critical work of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centers around the world. Species360 is grateful to Mandai Nature for supporting this work.
