Located in the Western Area Peninsula National Park of Sierra Leone, the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary provides a safe and natural haven and cares for close to 100 critically endangered Western chimpanzees. The organization also enforces Sierra Leone wildlife laws, conducts field research, and provides environmental sustainability and conservation education programs.

The Sanctuary recently joined global nonprofit Species360. Species360’s mission is to foster international collaboration in the collection and sharing of information to improve the care and conservation of wildlife. As part of this community, the Sanctuary will have access to the Species360 Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) and will use it to record and share essential information on the daily care of individual animals, groups, and their habitats. The Sanctuary may use Species360 Global Medical Resources, found in ZIMS, to monitor and treat medical conditions.

By using ZIMS, the Sanctuary also will contribute to global knowledge of the species in its care. Daily information on individuals, groups, and habitats, when combined with data from other Species360 member institutions worldwide, helps to change what we know about the care and conservation of species.
