Popular in ZIMS for Husbandry! Target Weight Range for animals at each phase of life

In fall 2020, ZSL London Zoo celebrated the arrival of five baby bushmaster snakes, watching them safely hatch over the course of three exciting days. Healthy young snakes of this species are relatively large compared with most hatchling snakes, each weighing between 64 and 70g – already as much as an adult song thrush – and will likely weigh up to 4 kg when they reach adulthood. In early 2021, Species360 released the ability to add a Target Weight Range for animals and eggs. Now, one year in, it is among the most used new features in ZIMS.

If you haven’t already, check it out! You can use this new ZIMS for Husbandry feature to target and monitor the weight ranges that apply to different physiological conditions during the life of an animal, such as juvenile, molting or pregnant.

Why is Target Weight Range such a favorite among zoo and aquarium staff? Ultimately, the Target Weight Range function improves the way that you utilize ZIMS data to make decisions for the animals in your care.

Monitoring selected individuals and groups:

By setting a target weight range, if a weight is recorded out of range, that weight will be flagged in red in the animal’s record and when viewing it in the ZIMS for Husbandry Animal Graphing Tool.

Users can also get a snapshot of the animals that have set target weight ranges by using column customization with an animal search, animal list, or from the enclosure occupants tab.
